I know that no one wants to pay extra money for anything, especially since the middle class is being squeezed economically and globally, but I can't believe with such uncertainty in fuel sources, projected availability and prices and the rising concerns of global warming that people, particularly in relatively small nations, such as the United Kingdom, are still purchasing SUV's.
I mean, at what point are we going to wake up? So, in that context, the road tax hikes were very much necessary. I applaud the efforts of the British government to assuage the effects of really stupid behavior. I hate to be so krass, but come on, now.

Re: Hoorah! For the Brits
Tue, January 2, 2007 - 9:43 PMDoesn't seem crass to me.
The reality of the matter is that SUVs have been given special breaks all along and it is time they ended. Their being let off easy on the fuel standards in the US and other exclusions is what let them be so profitable in the US.
I'd love to see them have to be licensed properly and subjected to more logical regulation than they have so far. Having them be allowed to register as a car is ridiculous when they weigh more then vehicles that are require to have truck plates, and even commercial plates in many cases.
