That has a lot of bullshit assumptions. Finance charge? I paid cash for almost every vehicle I've ever owned.

Gas mileage isn't an input value either. A Prius and an Excursion have dramatically different costs.

Sure the amount may be off depending on the type of vehicle and the type of driving (hwy vs. surface streets), but I think the real point is that the cost of driving a car goes beyond the purchase price, fuel, and maintenance. The Prius and the Excursion have many of the same hidden costs. They both require land for roads, parking lots, and factories, contribute to conjestion, encourge urban sprawl, etc.

Sorry, but I'm filing this calculator under BS.

Tell me how the motorcycle (56 MPG!) I paid cash for is going to have the same impact as an SUV? On roads, accidents, parking, blah blah blah.

Tsk tsk. This calculator would have been so much better if it actually had more than "annual miles" as the one user input.

Consumer reports did one of these years ago that simply calculated out of pocket expenses for various auto options.

The fun part of that truly interactive calculator was realizing that the chump who leases a new SUV every 3 years ends up with around $1,000,000 less in their retirement account than someone who buys a slightly used, 'sensible' car every 8...

That's the type of tool that changes minds, not some overblown "cars are bad, mmmmkay?" 'calculator' that preaches to the converted.

Sorry for the rant, but I hate bad science.

          Same here,

I am all for the environment, but hyperbole of a few activists going for shock just damages their credibility and justifies the bastards who try to prevent any meaningful regulation from happening. A guy like O'Reilly or Rush Limbaugh would have no trouble pointing out how that website is an example of unscientific emotionally driven liberal activism they never point to anyone credible and well researched who can challenge them.

Really, it's almost as if they are working for the other side if they are going to be that shoddy.

I know my tiny cash paid capri doesn't cost that much.
